MASKA x MARIAM ABBAS

A stylized botanical vector illustration of Senna Italica - a native flowering plant - depicting all its stages from seed to pod to bloom was created exclusively for Maska, a concept gift wrap store inspired by the traditional Japanese practice of using cloth for wrapping items. The 3 x 3 meter artwork was showcased in an installation at D3’s Dubai Design Week 2024. The artwork is now available on raw-silk gift wraps in various sizes, ranging from 120 x 120 cm to as small as 32 x 32 cm, and includes a guide on its different uses. Maska’s versatile fabric wraps can be used to wrap gifts, frame as art, or even style as a scarf, offering endless possibilities for creativity.

Senna Italica - commonly known as Port Royal Senna in English - is a perennial flowering shrub in the legume family. Native to the United Arab Emirates, it spans Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. With bright yellow flowers and pinnate leaves, Senna Italica thrives in both arid deserts and wadis. Known for its medicinal properties, the plant's leaves, pods, and seeds are used as a natural laxative. It is a common ingredient in traditional medicine for treating digestive issues.
